Quick Answer
The zodiac animal repeats every 12 years, but the full cycle is 60. Each year pairs one of ten Heavenly Stems with one of twelve Earthly Branches — and only 60 of the 120 possible pairings are valid, because stems and branches must share the same polarity. That is why every animal sign appears in five element variants, not twelve.

1. Two cycles, not one
Most people know the animal: Rat, Ox, Tiger and so on, repeating every twelve years. That cycle exists, but it is only half the system.
Running alongside it is a second cycle of ten Heavenly Stems, each associated with one of the five elements in either yang or yin form. The two cycles turn at different speeds, and their alignment produces the year's full designation — for example 丙午 Bing Wu, "Yang Fire Horse".
Because ten and twelve share a common factor of two, the two cycles realign every sixty years rather than 120. That sixty-year span is the unit traditional Chinese calendrics actually counts in.
2. Why only 60 of 120 combinations exist
Ten stems times twelve branches suggests 120 pairings. Only half are used, and the reason is polarity.
Every stem is either yang or yin, and so is every branch. The rule is that a year's stem and branch must match: a yang stem pairs only with a yang branch.
The five yang stems are 甲 丙 戊 庚 壬 (Jia, Bing, Wu, Geng, Ren), and the six yang branches are 子 寅 辰 午 申 戌 (Rat, Tiger, Dragon, Horse, Monkey, Dog). The five yin stems are 乙 丁 己 辛 癸 (Yi, Ding, Ji, Xin, Gui), pairing with the six yin branches 丑 卯 巳 未 酉 亥 (Ox, Rabbit, Snake, Goat, Rooster, Pig).
Five yang stems pair with six yang branches — 30 combinations. Five yin stems pair with six yin branches — another 30. Total: 60.
This also explains a pattern people notice without knowing why: an animal sign only ever appears with certain elements. The Rat is always yang, so it never combines with a yin stem. The Ox is always yin, so it never combines with a yang stem.
3. Five variants per animal
Because 60 ÷ 12 = 5, every animal sign appears five times across the cycle — once with each element, but always at the same polarity.
| Element pair | Rat years | Goat years |
|---|---|---|
Read the Goat column: 2027 is 丁未 Ding Wei, a Yin Fire Goat. The previous Fire Goat was 1967 — sixty years earlier. This is why "Year of the Goat" alone tells you very little: there are five kinds, and they are sixty years apart.
For how animal signs combine with elements in detail, see zodiac elements.
4. Working out any year
The calculation is arithmetic, and worth knowing because it lets you check any source.
For the stem: subtract 4 from the year, take the remainder mod 10, and count from 甲.
For the branch: subtract 4 from the year, take the remainder mod 12, and count from 子.
Two worked examples:
- 2026 → 2026 − 4 = 2022. 2022 mod 10 = 2 → 丙 (Bing). 2022 mod 12 = 6 → 午 (Horse). So 2026 is 丙午, Yang Fire Horse.
- 2027 → 2022 + 1 → 丁 (Ding), 未 (Goat). So 2027 is 丁未, Yin Fire Goat.
The "subtract 4" is not arbitrary: it shifts the count so that year 4 CE aligns correctly with 甲子, the first pair of the cycle.
One caveat: this yields the calendar-year stem and branch. In BaZi, the year pillar changes at Li Chun (early February), not at January 1 — so someone born in January belongs to the previous year's pillar. See when the zodiac year starts for that boundary.
5. What the cycle actually means
Two practical consequences follow from the structure.
"Same animal" is a weak match. Two Goats can be sixty years apart and carry different elements and polarities. Anything read from the animal alone is reading one of twelve positions and ignoring the other five-way distinction.
The element is part of the name, not a separate layer. In traditional usage 丙午 is not "Horse, fire element" as two facts — it is one designation. The element is intrinsic to the year, which is why a 2027 Goat and a 2015 Goat are read differently.
For the full list of animals by year, see zodiac by year. For what the yearly designation does not tell you about a person, see the note on year pillars in zodiac elements and compatibility.
6. Common misconceptions
"The cycle is 12 years." The animal cycle is 12; the full stem-branch cycle is 60. They are different cycles running together.
"My element is my animal's element." The animal does not have a fixed element. It takes whichever of the five aligns with that year's stem.
"All Goats are the same." Five variants, sixty years apart, alternating polarity. This is the most common simplification in popular zodiac content.
"The zodiac year starts January 1." It starts at Li Chun, in early February. January births belong to the previous year.
7. Common questions about the 60-year cycle
Why is the Chinese zodiac cycle 60 years and not 12?
Because two cycles run at once — ten stems and twelve branches. Their least common multiple is 60, so the full designation repeats every sixty years while the animal alone repeats every twelve.
Why are there only 60 combinations instead of 120?
Stems and branches must share polarity: yang with yang, yin with yin. That halves the 120 possible pairings to 60.
How do I find my zodiac element?
Use your birth year's Heavenly Stem. Subtract 4 from the year, take the remainder mod 10, and count from 甲 through the five elements (each element covers two consecutive stems). Remember the year changes at Li Chun, not January 1.
Is 2027 the Year of the Fire Goat?
Yes — 2027 is 丁未 Ding Wei, Yin Fire Goat. The previous Fire Goat year was 1967.
Does the 60-year cycle affect a BaZi reading?
It sets the year pillar's stem and branch, which is one of four pillars. The year pillar is the least personal of the four; readings of the individual centre on the day pillar.
