Two clarifications:
First, it is not "academic versus eccentric." The usual shortcut — Direct Resource means formal education, Indirect Resource means self-taught — narrows a polarity distinction into an education history. Polarity describes how support arrives, not what credentials you hold.
Second, Indirect Resource is not unlucky. 偏印 is sometimes treated warily in classical texts because it is less conventional, but the same texts treat it as the source of specialist depth. Read it as a different route to support, not a lesser one.
3. How polarity decides the label
Take a Jia Wood Day Master (Yang Wood). Water produces Wood, so Water is the Resource element. Water appears in two stems:

One note on tradition: Direct Resource is classically associated with the mother and with senior figures who provide backing. That association is cultural and dated; this article keeps to the support side of the reading.
4. Why more Resource does not mean more support
The number of Resource stars says how prominent the support theme is — how much of the chart is organised around learning, backing, absorption and being provided for. It does not say how much support you actually receive, or how well it serves you.
Whether a prominent Resource theme helps depends on the Day Master's strength — and for Resource the logic runs in the opposite direction from Wealth and Officer:
- Weak Day Master — Resource is what the chart needs. Support feeds a Day Master that lacks it. Resource stars here read as genuine reinforcement.
- Strong Day Master — the chart already has surplus support. More Resource reinforces an already-saturated chart. This is where the classic caution appears: support without outlet.
So Resource is the one group where more is not automatically better in either direction. Wealth and Officer tend to be useful for a strong chart; Resource tends to be useful for a weak one. Same count, opposite reading, depending on strength.

Because Resource is the only inward-feeding group, it carries a tension the other groups do not.
Support that arrives continually can become reliance. In traditional terms, heavy Resource with insufficient Output (the element the Day Master produces) is described as a chart that absorbs well but releases less: plenty of input, less conversion into action. Classical commentary frames it as knowing a great deal and acting on relatively little.

7. When the Luck Pillars bring Resource into focus

- A Luck Pillar activating Resource tends to foreground learning, study, recuperation and receiving support — a period that favours intake over output.
- For a weak Day Master, that is often the useful direction. For a strong one, it can read as a stretch of consolidation with less forward movement.
- The annual pillar adds the finer layer: Heavenly Stem as the visible aspect, Earthly Branch as the materialising one.
