What a luck pillar is
After your Four Pillars (birth chart), a BaZi reading adds a sequence of 10-year luck pillars. Each one:
- Lasts exactly 10 years
- Carries its own stem + branch (and elements)
- Describes the flavor of that decade
- Flows in order from your early years through your life
Your chart is the map; luck pillars are the weather for each decade.
How luck pillars are calculated
Two rules determine your luck pillars:
- Direction: males born in yang years and females in yin years count forward; the reverse counts backward (from the month pillar).
- Starting age: the days from your birth to the next (or previous) solar term ÷ 3 = years until your first luck pillar (3 days = 1 year).

What each luck pillar means
Each decade's stem and branch bring their elements, which interact with your chart:
- Element support — a decade whose elements support your Day Master tends to feel easier
- Element drain — a decade that drains your element asks for more rest and care
- Annual years — within each 10-year pillar, yearly stars add smaller weather
The key insight: your chart is fixed, but the decades vary — some seasons favor action, others favor consolidation.
