Your dominant element is the energy leading your chart — the one your Day Master points to. It sets the tone for your temperament, your tendencies, and how you naturally respond under pressure. Here is how to find it and what each dominant element looks like in real life.
What "dominant element" means
In a BaZi chart, the Day Master is your core element. That is your dominant element by definition — the "self" the whole chart is read against. But dominance can also be read as the element appearing most often across the eight characters. Both lenses are useful:
| Lens | What it shows |
|---|---|
| Day Master (core) | The element you lead with — your nature |
| Most frequent (chart) | The energy saturating your environment and habits |
How to find yours
The cleanest way: generate your Four Pillars chart and read the day pillar's stem.
| Day Master stem | Dominant element |
|---|---|
| 甲 Jia / 乙 Yi | Wood |
| 丙 Bing / 丁 Ding | Fire |
| 戊 Wu / 己 Ji | Earth |
| 庚 Geng / 辛 Xin | Metal |
| 壬 Ren / 癸 Gui | Water |
Use a BaZi calculator to generate your chart in seconds.

Dominant element vs favorable element
These are different:
- Dominant (Day Master): who you are — your nature.
- Favorable (用神): what your chart needs to balance — possibly another element.
A Water-dominant person may have a Fire favorable element (what supports them). Understanding both gives the full picture of your Five Elements profile.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is my dominant element?
Your dominant element is your Day Master — the stem of your day pillar. 甲/乙 = Wood, 丙/丁 = Fire, 戊/己 = Earth, 庚/辛 = Metal, 壬/癸 = Water. Generate your chart with a BaZi calculator to find it.
Is dominant element the same as favorable element?
No. Your dominant element (Day Master) is your nature. Your favorable element (用神) is what your chart needs to balance — it may be a different element. Both matter in a full reading.
Can my dominant element change?
Your birth chart is fixed, so your Day Master (dominant element) does not change. What changes is how it expresses — different life seasons, annual energies and conscious growth can shift how strongly your nature leads.
What if my chart has more of another element?
That is normal and useful. Your Day Master is your core even if another element appears more often. The frequent element shows the energy around you; the Day Master shows who you are within it.
